Vedic vs Western astrology – Kundali matching or synastry?

Have you done a Kundali match and got a completely different result from a Western compatibility test? Or are you in a relationship where one partner grew up with Indian astrology and the other with Western astrology? You're not alone.

Both traditions compare two birth charts, but they calculate differently and answer different questions. Here we explain the difference – and how you can use AstroMatch as a complement to Kundali matching or as a modern alternative.

The key differences at a glance:

    Zodiac

Vedic astrology (Jyotish) uses the sidereal zodiac, tied to the constellations. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, tied to the seasons and the spring equinox.

    What is compared

Kundali matching (Ashta Koota) is based mainly on the Moon's position and its lunar mansion (nakshatra). Western synastry compares the angles between all planets in both charts.

    Result

Kundali gives a score out of 36 gunas, where 18 is traditionally the pass mark. Synastry describes strengths and challenges in love, communication, emotions and long-term potential.

    Purpose

Kundali is traditionally used for arranged marriages and family decisions. Synastry is used to understand chemistry and relationship dynamics in every kind of relationship.

Why is my zodiac sign different in each system?

The Earth's axis slowly wobbles, a phenomenon called precession. As a result the spring equinox point has shifted against the constellations, and today the tropical and sidereal zodiacs differ by about 24 degrees.

That means most people fall one sign earlier in Vedic astrology. If you are a Taurus in Western astrology you are often an Aries in Vedic. Neither system is wrong – they measure from different starting points.

What Kundali measures – and what synastry measures

The eight categories of Ashta Koota (including varna, vashya, tara, yoni, graha maitri, gana, bhakoot and nadi) assess temperament, health, family harmony and children. Manglik dosha, a Mars placement traditionally thought to disturb marriage, is often checked too.

Western synastry looks at how your planets meet: Venus and Mars for attraction, the Moons for emotional security, Mercury for communication and Saturn for stability and commitment. No relationship is ruled out – the focus is on understanding where friction lies and how to handle it.

Complement or alternative – your choice

AstroMatch can be used in three ways:

    As a complement to Kundali

Already have your gunas? Add synastry to see the chemistry, communication and romance that the Moon-based score does not measure.

    As a modern alternative

For couples who want an equal, psychologically minded analysis without fatalistic prohibitions or a single placement labelling the match unsuitable.

As a bridge for intercultural couples

When partners come from different traditions, both systems add value. Synastry gives you a shared language for how you work together day to day.

    How AstroMatch calculates

We calculate planetary positions astronomically from date, time and place, then compare your charts using Western synastry in the tropical zodiac. We do not perform Vedic Kundali matching or calculate gunas – for that you need a Jyotish astrologer or a Kundali tool.
